Under the hood

How the Time Machine gets the number

Because you already gave it to us. Churn and average client lifespan are the same number viewed from opposite ends: a client who stays 20 months means you lose about a twentieth of your base every month, which is 5% churn. Lifetime value falls out the same way — $600 a month for 20 months is $12,000. You answer the questions you can actually answer, and the machine does the percentages.

Because losing clients is proportional, and a proportion needs something to bite into. Two businesses signing the same 6 clients a month go in opposite directions depending on whether they're starting from 20 clients or 200. Your starting base is what decides whether new sales are growth or replacement.

No, and don't treat it as one. It's a trajectory: where you land if the next 12 months behave exactly like the numbers you just entered. Nobody's churn holds perfectly steady. The point isn't the decimal place, it's the direction, and how much of the outcome is already locked in by numbers you're currently treating as background noise.

Work backwards from your last three months, which is what the Not sure? button does. Count everyone who stopped paying you across that quarter — cancelled, finished and didn't renew, quietly went dark — divide by three for a monthly figure, then divide that by your current client count. One divided by that is your average lifespan in months. Three months smooths out the one furious client who left in January.

Use an average. Take your last three months, add them up and divide by three, then enter that. A single great month or a single bad one sends the projection somewhere your business isn't actually heading. The three-month average is the honest line, and it's the one worth planning against.
